Reading retention beyond the day-seven curve
Retention becomes actionable when cohorts reflect why people arrived and what value they reached—not only when they installed.
A blended retention chart can hide very different experiences. Segment users by acquisition intent, first value action, plan, geography, or another factor with a credible relationship to continued use.
Make the practice repeatable
Compare cohorts only after checking instrumentation and sample size. Calendar effects, campaign mix, and delayed events can create movement that looks like product impact.
Pair the curve with qualitative evidence. Session review and customer interviews often explain why a cohort behaves differently and suggest the next experiment.
